Alongside the Xiangjiang River in the west and  facing the Yuelu Mountain in the east, Xingcheng-based Hunan Children’s Hospital is dedicated to children’s health.

Opening its doors on June 1, 1987, Hunan Children’s Hospital (hereinafter referred to as the “Hospital”) is located at 86 Ziyuan Road, Changsha and covers a land area of 82 mu (1 mu = 0.16 acre). Rated as one of the first Class III Grade I general children’s hospitals in 1995, the Hospital has implemented “JCI Accreditation Standards for Hospitals” from 2013 to 2015.

Furnished with 1,800 beds and staffed with 1,800 employees, the Hospital has established 36 clinical departments and 9 medical labs. The Pediatric ICU (PICU) is a key national clinical department,and Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Rehabilitation,and Nursing are selected as key provincial clinical departments. By far, the Hospital has set up Hunan Provincial Pediatric Emergency Center, Hunan Provincial Treatment and Rehabilitation Center of Pediatric Cerebral Palsy, Hunan Provincial Center of Adolescent Medicine, Hunan Provincial Prevention and Control Center of Pediatric Optometry, Amblyopia, and Strabismus. Affiliated to the Hospital are Hunan Provincial Quality Control Center of Pediatric Medicine,Provincial Research Center of PICU Clinical Care Technology, Specialized Pediatric Management Committee of Provincial Hospitals Association, Specialized Emergency Treatment Committee of Provincial Medical Association, Specialized Pediatric Rehabilitation Committee of Provincial Rehabilitation Association,and Specialized Pediatric Nursing Committee of Provincial Nursing Association.Currently, the Hospital serves as the vice president unit of the ChineseMedical Doctor Association’s Pediatricians Branch, and the deputy chief unit of the Chinese Medical Association’s Pediatric Emergency Treatment Group. In 2005,the Hospital successfully treated two of China’s first and youngest patients of human avian influenza. In 2006, China’s first extremely low birth weight infant of 500 g was discharged from the Hospital. The Hospital successfully performed separation operation of conjoined twins respectively in 2009 and in 2012.

Insisting on rejuvenating the Hospital with technology, Hunan Children’s Hospital has set up the highest awards—“ZhaoXiangwen Award” and “Xiangwen RMB 1 Million Teaching Award”. In 2002, the Hospital issued the Clinical Pediatric Surgery Magazine, a source journal for Chinese scientific and technical papers and citations. The Hospital established Hunan Pediatrics Research Institute in 2004 and further founded the National Post-doctoral Research Station in 2007. The Academy of Pediatrics set up in 2009 offers undergraduate pediatrics programs, trains full-time postgraduate students, and undertakes about 30 national continuing medical education programs every year. The Hospital won the “Soong Ching-ling Pediatrics Award”in 2010 and 2016. As a leading unit, the Hospital was granted a “National Sci-Tech Support Plan” program during the “12th Five-year Plan” in 2011.

Attaching great importance to international exchange and cooperation, the Hospital is China’s only pediatrics foreign aid training unit and Hunan Province’s Medical Foreign Aid Training Base. Undertaking 29 foreign aid training courses, the Hospital has trained 888 trainees for some 60 countries and regions. In 2016, the Hospital was awarded the “Hunan Key International Medical Center of Pediatrics”. By actively introducing foreign experts and intellectuals every year, the Hospital has launched international cooperation in terms of scientific research, technology, and training. By far,the Hospital has established the Child Autism Diagnosis and Treatment Research Center with the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities, founded the Pediatric Tumor Center with the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and worked with the Boston Children’s Hospital in the clinical application of the extra corporeal membrane. The Hospital has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University Hospital Hradec Kralove. Among the themed international seminars of different specialties held by the Hospital every year, six are international forums of PICU and newborns. China-United States(Xiaoxiang) International Pediatrics Forum has been held for four sessions.Enjoying an increasing awareness, the Hospital has bridged the excellent platforms of international cooperation and exchange for domestic and foreignpediatric medical workers. 

With a pilot unit of the electronic medical record designated by the Ministry of Health, the Hospital has completely paperless offices and digital diagnosis and treatment. As one of China’s first hospitals certified according to ISO9001/14001 in 2004, the Hospital insists on scientific development and developed the spirit of “Unity and Progress”, “Innovation and Advancement”, and “Better Yourself” in line with the motto of “Perfection, Wisdom, Scholarship, and Integrity”. By far, the Hospital has launched such charity programs as the “Smiling Angel Tour to Tibet”, “Love and Blessed Children’s Heart”, “Tomorrow’s Plan”, and “Decibels of Angels”, and paid the medical fees of RMB 100 million for patients who are children living in poverty. In the past decade, the Hospital has had 61 feature documentaries aired in CCTV, established 42 clinical supervision hospitals and worked with 200 mutual-referral hospitals, gaining better core competitiveness. Furthermore, the Hospital has won such national honors as an “Advanced Collective of National Health System”, “Advanced Collective of National Medicine and Health System”, “National May 1st Labor Award”, “National May 1st Women’s Model” and “Pioneer Worker”.
